Your role in the team
- Upvest is looking for a Senior Site Reliability Engineer to raise the bar on how we build, run and recover our systems.
- Our platform is on the critical path for our clients and their end customers, and as we scale, reliability and availability become increasingly crucial.
- In the near term, you'll focus on three things: eliminating toil, improving incident management and observability.
- That means establishing standards through automation and guardrails that make good engineering the default, turning our incident process into a robust and effective practice, and giving every team the telemetry they need to see what their services are doing in production.
- Over time, your scope grows into resilience architecture, chaos engineering, and disaster preparedness—ensuring our systems degrade gracefully and that we find weaknesses before our clients do.
- You'll work closely with product engineering teams, embedding SRE practices into how they design, ship, and operate, while mentoring engineers along the way.
- If you like the idea of setting technical direction for reliability across an organisation, and you measure your success by how rarely anyone has to think about you at 2am, this is the role for you.
- Incident Excellence: transform how we respond to and learn from incidents, turning recurring problems into opportunities through robust runbooks and a postmortem culture.
- Reliability as Code: establish SLOs, SLIs, and error budgets that become the shared language of engineering velocity and stability.
- Automation Leverage: eliminate toil ruthlessly.
- Build tools that let engineers focus on building value for our clients.
- Defensive Architecture: Establish SRE principles and patterns (circuit breakers, bulkheading, graceful degradation, intelligent rate limiting) to make our services resilient.
- Stress at Scale: validate system behavior under synthetic load and adversarial conditions, proving our defenses work to improve disaster preparedness.
- Proactive Defense: design chaos experiments, redundancy patterns, and failover strategies that validate resilience before customers ever see an issue.
Our expectations of you
Qualifications
- Technical Depth: hands-on expertise with SLOs, incident management, observability, automation, and the discipline of eliminating toil.
- Systems Thinking: You have a deep understanding of resilience architecture and how to design systems that fail gracefully.
- Influence Without Authority: exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills.
- You can change minds and shape culture through clarity and engineering excellence.
- Leadership: proven ability to mentor engineers, see projects through end-to-end and set technical direction in an engineering organisation.
- It's great if you have: Investment Industry Fluency: understanding our domain means your SRE decisions align with business reality, not just technical ideals.
Experience
- Deep SRE Mastery: years of experience in high-stakes environments (FinTech, payments, banking, trading, mission-critical SaaS) where downtime has real consequences.
- Stack Familiarity: experience with Golang, Kubernetes, GCP, Postgres, Kafka, or Datadog accelerates your impact.
